Mediterranean

The Mediterranean was a continuous theatre of corsair warfare between Christian and Muslim polities from the early sixteenth century through to the early nineteenth, an unusually long-running theatre by comparison with the more compressed Atlantic and Caribbean piracy eras. The corsair states of the Barbary coast — Algiers, Tunis, Tripoli, and (for part of the period) the independent Moroccan port of Salé — operated against European Christian shipping with the formal sanction of the Ottoman Empire and on the model of legitimate warfare under religious framing; the Knights of Malta and the Spanish operated against Muslim shipping in mirror image. The codex treats the period as one of state-level corsair operations rather than freelance piracy, with the leading commanders (Hayreddin Barbarossa, Dragut Reis, Murat Reis the Younger, and others) recorded under the names and titles by which they were known in their own services.
